Many investors remain underweight emerging markets (EM), driving historically cheap valuations. Looking ahead, a persistent rate-cutting cycle in the U.S., corporate earnings growth in EM, and potentially more stimulus from China should be positive forces for EM equity markets, while falling global inflation and re-rating in the relative growth potential adds to the constructive outlook for EM debt markets despite the rise in geo-political tensions. The Republican sweep of the 2024 election also introduces substantial headline risk and the potential for high tariffs for individual EM countries (e.g., 60% for China).
When pursuing opportunities in EM in the coming years, a more granular approach can be considered that targets the most compelling countries and names. To help us understand what this means for investors, we are fortunate to have a distinguished panel of seasoned industry experts to walk us through the EM outlook for 2025 and beyond:
• Gabriel Espana is a Managing Director and CEO at Iskali Capital Group (ICG). ICG is an Investment Banking Platform that supports investment opportunities in Emerging Markets, providing Development Banking Services to companies and projects to deliver both strong risk-adjusted returns and positive social impact in support of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Additionally, Gabriel is President of the Americas of the International Association of Financial Executives Institutes, IAFEI. Before joining ICG, he spent over 20 years at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector investment and financing arm of the World Bank Group.
• Oliver Fratzscher serves as the CEO of an investment advisory firm EM Leaders, which is growing institutional investments across emerging markets with top-decile performance from innovative investment products based on local research, systematic analysis, and dedicated networks. Prior to that, Oliver served as Chief Economist and Executive Vice President for the Canadian pension fund CDPQ, where he led the global economics team and developed cutting-edge global investment strategies together with aligned local partners. He contributed as thought-leader on the Sovereign Wealth Funds Advisory Board and served on the Board of BCA Research.
• Derek Scissors is a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), where he focuses on the Chinese and Indian economies and on US economic relations with Asia. He is concurrently the chief economist of the China Beige Book. Derek is the author of the China Global Investment Tracker. Before joining AEI, he was a senior research fellow in the Asian Studies Center at the Heritage Foundation and an adjunct professor of economics at George Washington University.
• Sean Stein is the incoming president of the US-China Business Council. He most recently served as the board chair of the American Chamber of Commerce in China and is the chair emeritus of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai. Sean also co-chaired the China Public Policy Practice at Covington and Burling where he advised international businesses on political risk, public affairs, communications, and US and China government relations.
