Markets were rocked in the past three years by events few predicted, including the Covid-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, and inflation’s staying power. In response, stocks and bonds fell simultaneously with both ending 2022 deep in the red. The “crypto winter”, meanwhile, is in full swing with bitcoin down nearly 65% last year.
Our emotions often are closely connected to how we manage money. This connection is even more evident during times of crisis. Being mindful of our emotions allows us to mute their effect or even harness them to one’s financial advantage. How can we identify emotions and bias, such as anchoring, risk aversion, overconfidence, and herd behavior, that are creeping into our investment process? How can we better apply behavioral science to active investment management?
We are fortunate to have highly respected industry experts to help us take a fresh look at the investing process as we enter a new year that may bring different challenges and opportunities. Michael D. Bailey, CFA is Director of Research and chair of the Investment Committee at FBB Capital Partners. Joseph F. Healy, CFA is Managing Director and Senior Equity Strategies Manager at Beacon Investment Advisory Services. Pamela J. Sams, CRPC is President of Jackson Sams Wealth Strategies.
