CAA Birders Re-Visit the North Woods

April 30, 2025 in New York's Central Park

Chase Alumni's second birding event attracted 14 alumni and friends on April 30, 2025 to the rustic North Woods of Central Park, an area that is always a revelation to those who only know the park south of 96th Street. Even the pigeons look more beautiful in the North Woods! (So do large turtles -- see below.)

Tod Winston of NYC Bird Alliance (formerly NYC Audubon), a master at identifying bird calls and spotting birds with his naked eye, led the CAA group, composed of both inexperienced birders and master birders (including Lou Morrell, former chair of the American Birding Association)
According to Winston, the group encountered 51 bird species on its walk, including 13 warbler species. Highlights included views of Solitary Sandpiper, Northern Waterthrush, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Blue-headed Vireo, Baltimore Oriole, Northern Flicker, Red-winged Blackbird, Northern Parula--and for those who lingered into the North Woods and Loch, more feathered friends including Ovenbird, Magnolia Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler and Black-crowned Night Heron. The full list is given below.

We're planning on another excursion in the fall of 2025. Look for the announcement, and join us! Winston even supplies binoculars.
