The AFLSE Scholarship for 2026-2027, covering tuition costs for a year of graduate study at LSE, has been awarded to Kali Stark.
Kali was born and raised in southeast Michigan where the Flint Water Crisis became a motivating factor in their decision to pursue environmental policy as a career. Kali graduated from George Washington University in 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and International Affairs. At GW, Kali worked as a research assistant at the Institute for International Economic Policy where they contributed to a project comparing the global consumption pattern of fossil fuels to behavioral models of addiction. Kali completed their senior thesis in economics on the cross-state effects of renewable portfolio standards.
After interning at the Environmental Protection Agency and an environmental communications firm, Kali worked as an Analyst at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission where they continued working on solving problems in electricity markets related to their interest in the renewable energy transition. At LSE, Kali is looking forward to improving their ability to analyze and describe the environmental costs of polluting industries on human and ecosystem health, and how these costs are distributed. Kali’s interests lie specifically in the electric industry and environmental justice impacts of industrial development and energy extraction.

In their free time, Kali enjoys visiting national parks, volunteering at the local community kitchen, and hosting dinner parties with friends.
