The AFLSE Scholarship for 2021-2022, covering tuition costs for a year of graduate study at LSE, has been awarded to Tina Huang.
Tina Huang graduated from Harvard University with an AB in Chemical and Physical Biology and a secondary in History. At Harvard, Tina worked in both scientific and policy roles at Johnson & Johnson as a Fung Foundation Fellow, the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and the Institute of Politics at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Her work at Johnson & Johnson assisting with the launch of new medical devices to developing countries opened her eyes to the many ways health policy and medicine intersect. This experience inspired her to seek out additional policy experience with the Institute of Politics, where she worked with the Massachusetts State Senate to develop research and policy briefings concerning public health issues in Boston. She was a researcher at Harvard’s Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology applying large-scale genetic sequencing to autophagy, taught multiple upper-level computational microscopy and biology courses as the first-ever undergraduate teaching fellow, and served as Resource Manager for the Massachusetts General Hospital Revere HealthCare Center student-run clinic.
As a medical student at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, she continued her interests in policy and oncology. She was a 2019 Radiological Society of North America Medical Student Research Fellow for her work studying the cost-effectiveness of prophylactic cranial irradiation in small-cell lung cancer. Her research in cost-effectiveness and health services in medical and radiation oncology has resulted in multiple first-author publications and presentations at national conferences. She is currently developing a program bridging the oncologic gap in care for underserved communities in Los Angeles. Outside her studies, she serves as Oncology Interest Group Director, Medical Education and Health Policy Director, and Medical Education Teaching Fellow with the School of Medicine at UCLA.
She will be pursuing a Master's of Science in International Health Policy from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) to further understand the complex financial and policy frameworks of healthcare. Upon graduation from LSE, she plans on a career in academic oncology, integrating medicine and health policy to make oncologic care in the United States more affordable and accessible.
